Cicada Dreams

Summoned by the season,

I will wake into darkness,

Stretch life into dormant limbs

And rise from this cloistered

Bed where I have slept

A decade or a day and

Claw, blind, up through the

Warming earth into a

Violence of light that blisters

My eyes and stiffens my

Skin until I am locked

Within myself, quivering,

Quickening, thrilling with

Terror until I burst newborn

With lusty blood into the

Glorious world on angel’s

Wings, body wholly body

Singing a song I had not known

Till now I knew to sing.
